On the slopes of Zlatibor in western Serbia, the Old Village Open-Air Museum in Sirogojno preserves the architecture and everyday life of the region’s traditional rural communities.
A Village Preserved as a Museum
Traditional wooden buildings were transferred from villages across the Zlatibor area and carefully reconstructed in Sirogojno. Houses, cottages, barns, dairies, corn cribs and workshops show how families organised their homes, farming and crafts in this mountainous region during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The characteristic Dinaric log houses were built from timber on stone foundations, with steep roofs adapted to the local climate. Interiors, household objects and working spaces help visitors understand how closely daily life was connected with agriculture, livestock and traditional crafts.
Crafts and Local Heritage
Sirogojno is also closely associated with traditional handicrafts, particularly knitting and wool work. The village became internationally known during the twentieth century through the work of local knitters, whose handmade garments brought traditional motifs into contemporary fashion.
The nearby Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul and the surrounding cultural landscape add another layer to the story of the village and its heritage.
Visiting Sirogojno
The museum is designed to be explored on foot, allowing visitors to move through reconstructed households and economic buildings while enjoying the Zlatibor landscape. Exhibitions, demonstrations and cultural programmes may also take place during the year.
