In the village of Perućac, near Bajina Bašta and Tara National Park, the Vrelo River makes a remarkably short journey before joining the Drina. Its course is only 365 metres long, which is why it is popularly known as the “River of a Year” – one metre for every day of the year.
A Small River with a Complete Course
Vrelo rises from a powerful karst spring and, despite its short length, has many of the features associated with much larger rivers. Along its course are small bridges, clear water, greenery and traces of traditional life beside the river.
At the end of its journey, Vrelo drops into the Drina in an attractive waterfall of around ten metres. The meeting of the two rivers is one of the best-known sights around Perućac.
Part of the Tara and Drina Experience
The river is easy to combine with a visit to Perućac Lake, the Drina and Tara National Park. The surrounding area offers viewpoints, hiking, cycling, paddling and other outdoor activities, making Vrelo a pleasant short stop within a much larger nature itinerary.
The 365-metre walk from the spring towards the Drina is short, scenic and easy to remember – exactly the reason this tiny river has become one of the area’s most distinctive natural attractions.
