Hidden in the Upper Town of Belgrade Fortress, close to the Victor Monument, the Military Bunker is a reminder of a much more recent chapter in the fortress’s long military history.
A Cold War Structure Inside an Ancient Fortress
The bunker was constructed in the early 1950s, after the Second World War, when military planners were preparing defensive facilities for the new geopolitical reality of the Cold War. It represents one of the last major military interventions made within the historic fortress complex.
Although designed for military use, the bunker was never put into the function for which it had originally been planned. Today its preserved underground interior gives visitors an unusual contrast to the Roman, medieval, Ottoman and Habsburg layers found elsewhere at the fortress.
Why Visit?
The bunker adds a twentieth-century perspective to a visit to Kalemegdan and Belgrade Fortress. Its confined rooms and utilitarian construction are very different from the monumental gates, towers and ramparts above ground, making it one of the fortress’s more unexpected attractions.
