Deep within the Lower Town of Belgrade Fortress stands the Great Gunpowder Magazine, often referred to as Barutana. Built during the eighteenth-century reconstruction of the fortress, the structure was originally designed for the secure storage of gunpowder.
From Gunpowder Store to Historical Exhibition
The massive interior that once served a military purpose now provides an atmospheric setting for a collection of Roman stone monuments. The lapidarium brings together archaeological material connected with ancient Singidunum, the Roman settlement that developed on the territory of present-day Belgrade.
Roman Stone Monuments
The collection includes stone monuments such as funerary stelae, sarcophagi, altars and sculptural fragments discovered in Belgrade and the surrounding area. Together they offer a glimpse into the people, beliefs and artistic traditions of the Roman city and its wider region.
The combination of Roman artefacts and eighteenth-century military architecture makes the Great Gunpowder Magazine one of the most distinctive exhibition spaces within Belgrade Fortress.
