Music of Serbia has a variety of traditional music, which is part of the wider Balkan tradition with its own distinctive sound and characteristics. Traditional or folk music in the Balkans was influenced particularly by Turkish music and the music from Western Europe, but as every other nation, Serbian people also managed to create its own recognizable instruments and original music.

Serbian music dates from the medieval period with strong church and folk traditions. The “gusle” (a single-stringed musical instrument) and the “frula” (a musical instrument resembling a flute) are typical folk musical instruments in Serbia. Filip Visnjic was a particularly notable guslar (gusle player), who saved many of the oldest epic poems from oblivion. There is also “tamburitza”. In every Serbian tavern you can find “tamburasi”-an orchestra which is playing traditional Serbian songs, so called “starogradska” music. The national folklore dance in Serbia is “kolo, and the most famous are “Užičko kolo” and “Moravac“.

Today you can hear sounds of old traditional folk music, pop, rock, turbo folk, rap, hip-hop, electro and house music around the country. The biggest musical event in Europe, the Eurovision song contest took place in Serbian capital in 2008. thanks to Marija Serifovic’s win at the 2007. contest in Helsinki,Finland with the song “Molitva”.

Serbia is the home of some major, globally known festivals like Dragacevo Trumpet Festival In Guca,Exit Festival in Novi Sad,Beer Fest In Belgrade and Nisville Jazz Festival in Nis.
