Famous Artists

Serbia has been the home of many famous works and artists. Our choice of them here is representative with intention to present artists from different periods and different artistic schools who reached the world fame and placed Serbia on a world map.

Paja Jovanovic

He was one of Serbia’s most acclaimed Realist painters who is best known for his early works using ordinary people during ″oriental cycles″, and his detailed dramatic realism in both mythical and everyday scenes. His best-known works touched on historical Serbian events, such as The Wounded Montenegrin, The Migration of the Serbs and The Wedding of Emperor Stefan Dušan.

Nadezda Petrovic

Considered Serbia’s most famous impressionist and fauvist, she was the most important Serbian female painter of the period. Nadezda was one of the women war photography pioneers in the region and also volunteered in three wars as a nurse. She earned a Medal for Bravery and an Order of the Red Cross for her efforts.  In her honour ,her portrait is on Serbian 200 dinar banknote.

Sava Sumanovic

Sumanovic was a painter from modern-day Serbia. He is considered to be one of the most important Serbian painters of the 20th century. His early artistic style was characterized by various influences, mainly Cubism but Fauvism and Expressionism as well. Some of his famous paintings are Luncheon on the Grass, Morning, Šid under Snow and Elm.

Milena Pavlovic Barili

The daughter of a famous Italian composer, Milena Pavlović-Barili was one of the most influential Serbian artists of the 20th century. She was born in Požarevac, and the house in which she was born is now a museum dedicated to her life. Pavlović-Barili’s career peaked as an illustrator for Vogue for a short time before she tragically died in a horse riding accident at the age of 35.
